"In Another Life" is an original mixed-media artwork exploring transformation, possibility and the beauty that can emerge when we see ourselves, and our lives from a different perspective.
A luminous white horse appears to emerge from the canvas, its form moving between delicately rendered detail and expressive abstraction. Soft whites and silvery greys are layered with romantic pink florals, fragments of silk burnout fabric and radiant passages of gold foil. The horse’s raised foreleg introduces a sense of movement; as though it is stepping forward, crossing from one world into another.
The artwork brings together many of the recurring themes that have become central to Belinda Baynes’ creative practice. The grace and strength of the equestrian lifestyle meet the tactile language of fashion and textile design, while expressive florals and a distinctly feminine sensibility bring softness, romance and vitality to the composition. Rather than existing as separate elements, the horse, fabric, flowers and metallic details overlap and flow into one another - reflecting a world in which art, fashion, femininity and equestrian life are beautifully intertwined.
The silk burnout fabric becomes an integral part of the composition, merging with the painted flowers and creating an interplay between pattern, texture and gesture. As the surrounding light changes, the metallic gold catches and reflects it differently, bringing warmth, depth and a subtle sense of movement to the artwork.
